I like Texas better than Oklahoma. Although the first town we came to this morning along Route 66 was Erick, OK, and it was really cool. I just stood in the intersection turning around taking in the view. It was a beautiful old town!

Then we got to Texas! First stop was Mclean. There was a restored Phillips Gas station.

Driving on Route 66 in Texas is a lot easier than it was in Oklahoma. Just drive route 40 until you see a sign for a town that has business 40 and historic route 66 on it. In Groom, TX, I saw the leaning water tower and a ranch that reminded me of ‘Dallas’ – the tv show.

After Groom, we were driving along business 40 / route 66 and there was a fork in the road. I continued straight. It was completely desserted and nothing around – anywhere. I was almost as scared as I was on the dirt road in Dyess, AR. The only thing saving me from hysterics was that my gps told me I would be back on route 40 in 6 miles. That was a long 6 miles! I stopped at the nearest rest stop once I was back on 40.

Finally we reached Amarillo. I love Amarillo! I was on the search for Cadillac Ranch. I had to circle it twice before finding the turnoff, but I found it. It was quite a little walk from route 40, and it was so windy I had dirt in my teeth. But it was cool. Just these Cadillacs in the ground where people graffiti.

We drove to Palo Duro Canyon State Park because I thought the dogs would enjoy a nice walk. It was about a 25 minute drive south of route 40. But when we got there, there was a long, long stand still line to get in, so we turned around and left. I did get to see some of the canyon though, and it was beautiful.

Then it was time for the Big Texan Steak Ranch! I’ve been waiting for this for a while. I have to admit that I first heard of the Big Texan on Tori & Dean’s show – they stopped there for dinner. Then I found out the Big Texan had a motel and they allow dogs! They even have a doggie corral where Elvis & Cilla can go off leash. They liked that. The hotel is really cool, but they put the dog people in the Alamo next to the horse hotel. The horses are literally right next to our room. Elvis barks at them thinking they’re big dogs. There is also a Texas shaped swimming pool and of course the famous Big Texan Steak House. Irony is I’m a vegetarian.

After Elvis, Cilla & I unpacked and took a nap, we wondered around the Big Texan. They enjoyed the freedom of the Dawgy Corral and had fun barking at the people walking by. Then Elvis & Cilla stayed in the hotel room while I went to get dinner. I ordered my carry out and bought souvenirs. It’s a really cool place with a restaurant, bar, arcade, shop. I was very impressed upon my return that Elvis & Cilla were not barking and had not destroyed anything. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner, even without the steak.
