Dallas, Diner, Duran Duran – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

It’s, like, totally bitchin’ you came back to find out what my favorite D’s are from the 1980s. Like the most righteous tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Dallas
My parents and their friends were obsessed with Dallas, so I guess it trickled down to me because I still love Dallas. Visiting Southfork was my favorite part of my 2010 roadtrip through Texas and Route 66. I don’t have the entire series on dvd, but through the year Bobby’s death was a dream. I re-watch the series every year or so.

Diner
I was only 10 when Diner came out, so I did not see it until much later, but I love it. It was filmed in Baltimore by Baltimore director Barry Levinson about a group of friends in 1950s Baltimore. Again, I love anything set in the 50s. Plus it was filmed in my hometown and Mickey Rourke was hot back then. It was a great cast. Other than Rourke, Diner starred Kevin Bacon, Steve Guttenburg, Tim Daly, Paul Reiser, Daniel Stern and Ellen Barkin.

Duran Duran
I did not like Duran Duran in the 1980s when they were really hot, which is probably why I did not like them. It wasn’t until “Ordinary World” and “Come Undone” were released in the early 1990s that I became a Duran Duran fan. Then I went back and listened and loved all their hits from the 1980s. I saw Duran Duran twice on the No Ordinary World Tour and met Simon LeBon and John Taylor after the show at Merriweather. In fact, I hung out at the bar with Simon – as did many other fans. John gave me his guitar pick during the show in Fairfax. I am going to see Duran Duran again this week in DC. I won’t be hanging out with them after or getting a guitar pick though – my seat is good but it’s a seat and it’s not front row. I have Duran Duran’s latest album Paper Gods and it’s ok, but I still prefer their older stuff. My favorite Duran Duran song is “Ordinary World,” but my favorite Duran Duran song from the 80s is “The Reflex.” There is a lot to choose from including such hits as “Girls on Film,” “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio,” “Save a Prayer,” “Is There Something I Should Know” just to name a few.

Thank you for joining me on my trip back to the totally tubular 1980s as I complete my Blogging from A to Z Challenge. What was your favorite tv show, movie and band or song from the 80s starting with the letter D? Please come back tomorrow to read about my faves from the 80s that start with the letter E. And be sure to check out the 1970s from A to Z here.

  1. Well, I’m sorry, I was a Spandau Ballet girl 😉
I have never heard of Diner but my gosh, there were a lot of actors!!!
As for Dallas, I’ve never really watch it, but my granparents were addicted. I also had a schoolmate who was addicted both to Dallas and Dinasty. The year they both ended he was a wreak. Poor guy.

  2. Dallas – I remember how important it was to have seen the latest episode – could not miss it – and the furore when Bobby came back 🙂 I don’t know Diner, but Duran Duran are awesome. I remember being really into the Wild Boys video. Didn’t see them in the 80s but did finally go to a concert during the Pop Trash tour.

  3. Ah.. some nice memories from the 80s. I wasn’t too hip on Dallas. My mom was. I preferred Falcon’s Crest for some unknown reason *laughs* But Diner and Duran Duran.. oh yeah! Favorites!
    Best Wishes!

  4. Hi Deena!! Your blogs are getting better each day. Dallas!! Oh wow. I never really watched it but who can forget the infamous “Who Shot J.R.?” LOL. My favorites back then were “Different Strokes” and “A Different World”. I never saw Diner but it seems interesting especially with so many big name actors. And I have to agree with you about Mickey Rourke. 😊 My favorite from back then was definitely “Dirty Dancing”. Ahhhh yes, Duran Duran. I loved their music back then. Especially “The Reflex”, ” Hungry Like The Wolf”, “Come Undone”, & “Ordinary World”. But I also loved Depeche Mode back then. Both great groups. Thanks again for another exciting blog and keep up the great work! Blessings.

  5. I remember the big cliffhanger of Dallas – who shot JR. Don’t recall Diner at all. But I definitely remember Duran Duran!

  7. I did not watch Dallas but still got caught up in the Who shot JR craze. I was more a fan of the spinoff Knots Landing.

  8. I watched Dallas religiously until Bobby Ewing walked out of that shower and wiped out an entire season, then I turned and walked away! ;P I did watch some Dynasty too.

I love Duran Duran – Wild Boys is just a fantastic song and video. I do like their later stuff as well, I love Ordinary World. I went to see them on their Pop Trash tour.

  9. As a young boy, I was not much into the show Dallas. And I don’t recall the Diner film. But Duran Duran I certainly loved. And I loved them when they were hot. Probably my favourite song is Rio.
