Knots Landing and The Karate Kid – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

Like, OH MY GOD! It’s totally awesome you came back to find out what my favorite K’s are from the 1980s. Like the most rad tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Knots Landing
Even though it was a spinoff of Dallas, I love Knots Landing more. I didn’t watch Knots while it was airing. I watched it years later when the entire series was re-aired on TNT or SoapNet – I can’t remember which possibly both, but I was hooked. It is about more regular people than Dallas, so it is a little more identifiable. The first season is a little slow, but once Donna Mills joined the cast as Abby Cunningham (soon to be Ewing) Knots Landing immediately became the cul de sac where you wanted to live! (Kind of what Heather Locklear did for Melrose Place in the 1990s.) I now have the complete series (all 14 seasons) on dvd and rewatch it once a year or every other year.

The Karate Kid movie
As one of my top five favorite movies of all time (you’ll learn about two of the others next week), I’m obsessed with The Karate Kid. I watch it constantly. I know every line. I have it on dvd and downloaded on my kindle and on my phone for emergencies. I spent this past New Year’s Eve watching The Karate Kid trilogy with a friend, the first is heads and shoulders above the other two although the second one isn’t bad. Why I love this movie so much is partially the nostalgia factor – taking me back to 1984 when I was in middle school dreaming of a romance with Ralph Macchio (oh how I adored him!) But the movie does still hold up today, it is still very entertaining and has that feel good Rocky feeling at the end when Daniel wins. Oh, sorry spoiler alert.

The Karate Kid soundtrack
I love The Karate Kid soundtrack SO much I made it my favorite music from the 1980s starting with K. I bought the record back in 1984 and still have it today, and still play it today on my record player. It is really a great soundtrack. As I listen to the songs, the scenes from the movie play in my head. For some reason, the most famous song in the movie was not on the soundtrack – Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer” is not included.

Thank you for joining me on my trip back to the totally tubular 1980s as I complete my Blogging from A to Z Challenge. What was your favorite tv show, movie and band or song from the 80s starting with the letter K? Please come back tomorrow to read about my faves from the 80s that start with the letter L. And be sure to check out the 1970s from A to Z here.

Oh how cool that you wrote about Knots Landing too! And we did the exact same thing: I didn’t watch it when it was in primetime, I saw it every day on TNT. It aired at 10am every morning. Do you remember the last episode? they aired it by airing two episodes on one day. I turned the TV off after the show was over, thinking I’d come back the next day for the series finale, not realizing they were airing the finale right after that episode. I came back the next day, same time, and something else was airing. The finale had already aired the day before. I was soooo mad! I finally did get to see the ending years later but boy, was I pissed off that day! After investing all that time into the show to be robbed of the finale was a real jolt! 🙂

I have never seen The Karate Kid. I know, that’s pretty pathetic. I need to watch it one of these days. I know it’s a classic.

So glad you came to visit my blog. I’m going to start following you. Will be fun to see if we chose some of the same shows. I’m featuring mostly 60s and 70s shows but there are a few 80s shows thrown in (like Knots). Can’t wait to see what you post tomorrow. I like that you’re doing TV, music and movies. Fun theme!

  3. Oh wow. I remember Knots Landing. It was a good show. I didn’t watch it all the time but when I did I enjoyed it. My favorite shows during this era was Knight Rider and Kate & Allie. Wow the Karate Kid. I think I saw it once. I never really was able to get into it. Perhaps one day I will watch it again. My favorite for back then was Krush Groove. I don’t t have any favorite artist or bands from back then with the letter K. But again great work Deena.

  5. I also loved Karate Kid and was in middle school during the 80s. Don’t remember any specific K obsessions except maybe Stephen King books.

  6. I had an unabashed teenage crush on Daniel from The Karate Kid. Clearly it still has some hold on me. Quick story: I’m an actor and stage combatant at a Ren Faire. Prior to one of the living chess games, everyone had to strike a dramatic pose. My choice? The Crane. Made my nerdy heart happy every single day.

  7. The Karate Kid film for me is number 2 – I didn’t see the first one until much later, but it is awesome :). I never watched Knots Landing only Dallas – one lot of drama was enough for me 😉 Although there was always Dynasty as well – always had a think for Michael Nader.

  8. I like collecting movie soundtracks, but this is one I don’t have. I’ll have to look into it, though it’s too bad Bananarama is not on it. Oh well, I have that song on a few other CD’s I’m sure. The movie was great, I seriously need to pick this up on DVD.
