Laverne and Shirley, Legend, Huey Lewis – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

It’s, like, totally bitchin’ you came back to find out what my favorite L’s are from the 1980s. Like the most righteous tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Laverne & Shirley
FYI all spinoffs from my favorite television show Happy Days will be in this 1980s A to Z blog challenge. Laverne and Shirley first appeared on Happy Days as double dates for Fonzie and Richie. Shortly after Laverne and Shirley was the first spinoff from Happy Days, and even crossed over a few times. Maybe Laverne and Shirley were my role models – single and living in a basement. Laverne and Shirley was hysterical and the “Betty pick up please” scene is one of my favorites.

Legend
It was almost a tie between Ladyhawke and Legend, both were released in 1985. Legend won out because it starred Tom Cruise (and Mia Sara from Ferris Bueller), and I loved Tom Cruise back then. Ladyhawke was great too starring Matthew Broderick (also from Ferris) and Michelle Pfeiffer (from Grease 2). I know the most popular of this genre in the 1980s was Labyrinth starring David Bowie a year later, but it wasn’t my favorite of the three ironically all starting with L. I don’t watch this movie anymore as I no longer like this genre, but I was obsessed with both Legend and Ladyhawke back in the day.

Huey Lewis and the News
I did my report in music class in the eighth grade on Huey Lewis and the News. I still have my Sports record from the 1983 with great hits such as “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” “Heart and Soul,” “If This Is It,” and “I Want a New Drug.” Those were all great songs, but my favorite from Huey Lewis is “The Power of Love” from Back to the Future.

Thank you for joining me on my trip back to the totally tubular 1980s as I complete my Blogging from A to Z Challenge. What was your favorite tv show, movie and band or song from the 80s starting with the letter L? Please come back tomorrow to read about my faves from the 80s that start with the letter M. And be sure to check out the 1970s from A to Z here.

  1. I always thought Huey Lewis and the News should have named all their albums after a section of a newspaper:
    Sports
    Front Page
    Op/Eds
    Classifieds
    Metro

    And their breakup album:
    Obituaries

hahaha. Great clip from Laverne & Shirley! Loved her monogrammed clothes all the time…
Great Huey Lewis song. I’m not familiar with Legend. Will have to check that one out!

  3. I love Legend, Ladyhawke and Labyrinth 🙂 I can watch them all over and over again. My fav is Ladyhawke, then Labyrinth then Legend – mostly because I find a couple of the supporting characters in Legend annoying 🙂

  4. Laverne & Shirley! I so loved that show. Until they moved to California, then it got weird.

  5. Huey Lewis and the New was my very first concert. I saw them for either my 12th or 13th birthday. I loved them in when I was younger. I also enjoyed Laverne and Shirley as a kid. Great memories!

  6. Loved Laverne and Shirley. More so when they were in Milwaukee. The time before the move to California was to me more true to the Happy Days roots. Great post.

  7. Legend and Ladyhawke are incredible movies. I’ll get them for my daughter so I can watch them again too. We watched Labyrinth together and it was a little painful with the hokey songs, but by the end, my kids got into the story.

  8. Hi Deena!! Oh wow this is a good one!! Laverne & Shirley were definitely one of my favorite shows from the 80’s!!! It was so funny!! What I loved most about the show was the opening credits and theme song!! I miss this show. But during that era I also loved The Love Boat! The opening credits and theme song! It was also funny and a very good show. I’ve never seen Legend. Perhaps one day I need to check it out. But I have a ton of favs from the 80’s starting with the letter L. They are: The Last Dragon (kind of cheesy but funny) I still watch it quite often. Lean On Me, Lethal Weapon, The Lost Boys, and La Bamba. I still watch all of them whenever they come on or I’ll rent them. I did enjoy some of Huey Lewis and The News songs from back then. I wasn’t a fan but I did enjoy their music including: Power of Love, If This Is It, and Do You Believe In Love. Once again a great blog my friend and much success and blessings Deena!

  9. Huey Lewis and the News is a great band, but for some reason they make me think of the movie “American Psycho.” 😉

  10. L is a great letter for the 80s. Laverne and Shirley is great, especially the Milwaukee references. Shotz Brewery as you may be aware, is poking fun of the Schlitz Brewery. The location of which is actually within walking distance of where I currently work.
As for the music guest today, Huey Lewis is my favourite artist of the 80s. I’ve been to many of his concerts and I hear he is coming back for another show soon. I liked to collect mementos so one year I went on ebay and found someone selling a 1987 Huey Lewis backstage concert badge. They sold it for only about $5 so I picked it up.
