Mork and Mindy, Mystic Pizza, Madonna – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

Like, OH MY GOD! It’s totally awesome you came back to find out what my favorite M’s are from the 1980s. Like the most rad tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Mork and Mindy
My favorite television show Happy Days second spin-off was Robin Williams first starring role. Robin Williams guest starred on Happy Days as Mork then they spun off to his own show Mork and Mindy. Mork returned once more to Happy Days. For some reason, I really loved when Mork and Mindy had ‘baby’ Merth. Robin Williams was hysterical and brilliant, but Mork and Mindy was a really cheesy show that I don’t watch much now even though I have the first season on dvd, but i loved it back in the day.

Mystic Pizza
If you have never heard of Mystic Pizza, go watch it now. It was Julia Roberts second film – her first was Satifaction with Justine Bateman from Family Ties. Mystic Pizza is a story about the lives of three women in their early twenties who work in a pizza place in Mystic, CT called Mystic Pizza. I went to the real Mystic Pizza, which looks totally different than it does in the movie. I even coersed one of the cooks to sell me the shirt off his back, his Mystic Pizza Slice of Heaven shirt.

Madonna
I LOVED Madonna – in middle school, in high school and in college (although college was after the 1980s). After seeing the video for “Lucky Star,” I think I really wanted to be Madonna. To me, she was just so cool and independent. I wore the black jelly bracelets, but obviously was too young to wear any of her lacy racy outfits. I was in love with “Crazy for You,” like obsessed with it. My favorite Madonna song is “Burning Up,” with “Dress You Up” and “Into the Groove” as close seconds, but my favorite Madonna video is “Papa Don’t Preach” mostly because it is like a mini movie. I finally saw Madonna in concert in the early 2000s and was very disappointed that she was lip syncing. I understand she does lots of dancing and theatrics, but I didn’t go to see a play, I went to see a singer. I really haven’t followed her career after that, but oh how I loved her in the 1980s (and 1990s).

Thank you for joining me on my trip back to the totally tubular 1980s as I complete my Blogging from A to Z Challenge. What was your favorite tv show, movie and band or song from the 80s starting with the letter M? Please come back tomorrow to read about my faves from the 80s that start with the letter N. And be sure to check out the 1970s from A to Z here.

  1. I loved Mystic Pizza, partially because I grew up in Connecticut and it was the rare movie set in that state. While all the other boys were crazy about Julia Roberts, I had a crush on Annabeth Gish. I’ve been to Mystic Pizza and I think pizza *is* really good (although that was nearly 20 years ago).

  2. LOL!!! Mork & Mindy!!! Now thats a blast from the past!! I used to watch this show a lot with my friend and we used to sit there and crack up!! It was definitely on my favorite list along with Mac Gyver (I loved when he made those little contraptions toward the end of the show LOL) and Magnum P.I. (which I used to watch all the time with my mom). I’ve never seen Mystic Pizza but I did have some faves which were Major League (LMBO…stupid movie but hilarious), Mannequin, and Maximum Overdrive (which freaked me out as a kid thinking all trucks and machinery will one day turn against us LOL). I still watch all of these shows today as if seeing them for the first time and just to get some laughs. Now Madonna was my girl!! I still love Crazy For You, Lucky Star, Papa Don’t Preach, Vogue, Material Girl, Like A Virgin, and Express Yourself (especially the video) just to name a few. Thanks again for such a great blog and a trip down memory lane my friend!!! Blessings!

  3. I only remember brief flashes of Mork and Mindy from the 80s – most of what I have seen has been catching to odd rerun :). Robin Williams was an amazing actor. My sister once threw Madonna’s Gambler at my head – luckily it hit the wall, not me ::g::

  4. Like Cher, Madonna transcends the decades. She reinvents herself, a true talent. Robin Williams RIP. We were in Connecticut this past weekend related to my daughters future college and when I saw Mystic on the map, the movie was the first thing that came to mind. Great post today.

I love Madonna! Reminds me of my very short-lived modeling days back in the 80s…Papa Don’t Preach is such a good song.
I forgot all about Mork & Mindy! That was a good show. Poor Robin Williams: that was such a tragic end for such a brilliant comedian.
Mystic Pizza was a fabulous movie. Wasn’t that Julie Roberts breakout hit?

    Great post, as always!

  6. I lost interest in Madonna after her “Like A Virgin” tour. She took off in a completely different direction and I didn’t like it. Great singer, though.

Apart from the episodes with Jonathan Winters and the crazy religious guy (can’t remember his name but he was hilarious), “Mork and Mindy” was tiresome. Robin Williams could get very obnoxious at times…

    • at the time i loved mork and mindy, but now watching it it is pretty bad – didn’t really hold up. but yes jonathan winters and his religious friend were hysterical and the best part of that show. i liked madonna a little longer than you. i loved the ray of light album but like i wrote after seeing her lip syncing in concert i no longer followed her. but in the 1980s i adored her! thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts.

  7. I still listen to Madonna, especially her older stuff. Though there were a few I didn’t like, overall I liked her music.
I was also a Mork and Mindy fan, but the birth of Merth never interested me. Yes, it was cheesy, but I’d watch it if I caught it on reruns.
