Punky Brewster, Pretty in Pink, Phil Collins – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

It’s, like, totally bitchin’ you came back to find out what my favorite P’s are from the 1980s. Like the most righteous tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Punky Brewster
I watched Punky Brewster, but it certainly wasn’t one of my favorites from the 1980s, but there is no other television show starting with a P that I watched from the 80s.  Punky Brewster was an orphan who, along with her dog Brandon, went to live with a grumpy older man.

Pretty in Pink
Like my other favorite movies, I have Pretty in Pink downloaded on my phone and kindle as well as on dvd and watch it repeatedly throughout the year. It is one of my top five favorite movies of all time, not just one of my faves from the 1980s. Pretty in Pink just had its 30th anniversary and was re-released in the theater for two nights. Of course I went to see it, and it was great to watch it on the big screen again. Not sure why I love this movie so much as my faves aren’t usually romantic comedies (Grease, The Outsiders, The Karate Kid, Girl Happy) and I did not have a crush on Andrew McCarthy, but I know every line and could watch it every day and not getting tired of Pretty in Pink. Molly Ringwald and Andrew McCarthy teamed up again a few years later to make Fresh Horses, which isn’t nearly as good and totally different from Pretty in Pink, but I still love that one too. The soundtrack from Pretty in Pink is amazing. “If You Leave” by OMD is quintessential 80s and one of my favorites.

Phil Collins
I loved Phil Collins in high school (and into college), especially the album No Jacket Required with songs “One More Night” and “Susudio.”  Other great hits from Phil Collins include “Take a Look at Me Now,” “Separate Lives,” “Easy Lover” and my favorites “In the Air Tonight” and “Against All Odds.” I was obsessed with “Against All Odds” – the song, not the movie. It just really got to me. It was my go-to break up song. I saw Phil Collins in concert when he toured with Genesis in the early 1990s. And of course Phil is a drummer, so he has that going for him!

Thank you for joining me on my trip back to the totally tubular 1980s as I complete my Blogging from A to Z Challenge. What was your favorite tv show, movie and band or song from the 80s starting with the letter P? Please come back tomorrow to read about my faves from the 80s that start with the letter Q. And be sure to check out the 1970s from A to Z here.

  1. Like it or not, Punky Brewster is emblematic of the 80s sitcom.

I loved “Against All Odds” so much I actually took the time to transcribe the lyrics, playing the tape over and over to catch the words. What kids had to do before the internet!

So good! I love Phil Collins. Easy Lover is one of my favorite songs. Against All Odds is wonderful too. You’re right: it’s the perfect break-up song. That whole album, No Jacket Required, is fantastic! Great way to start my morning!
Pretty in Pink had a great young cast!
    I never watched Punky Brewster…

  3. Duckie’s “Try a Little Tenderness” = still one of the best 80s movie scenes ever. 🙂

  4. Not a big fan of Pretty in Pink but like due to Molly. I was a big Andrew McCarthy fan. Watching him now in The Family and loved him in a holiday time TV movie where he needed ballroom lessons and fell in love with the studio owner.

  5. Don’t say things like 30th anniversary! 🙂 Phil Collins, I used to love Phil Colins – Soph and I would play his albums and belt out the lyrics.

  6. I’ve only ever seen Pretty in Pink once all the way through! I did love Andrew McCarthy though, (actually still do – he’s great in The Sight and Kingdom Hospital).

  7. Wow. Punky Brewster. I used to watch it but not a favorite of mine either. It was one of those shows you watched when nothing was on. I’ve never watched the whole of Pretty In Pink. I’ve watched some of it. If it’s as good as you say, another added to my must watch movies. Phil Collins. Yes he made some great music. A lot of songs you mentioned were my favorites also. Here’s a couple of my favorites from that era; tv show- Private Benjamin, movies-Police Academy, The Princess Bride & Purple Rain. Music-Prince. Thanks again for a great blog Deena. Keep it up. Blessings.

  8. We never watched “Punky Brewster,” so I wasn’t aware it was set in Chicago. Interesting.

I don’t know how you can talk about “Pretty in Pink” without mentioning Jon Cryer or Annie Potts. Theirs were two of the best characters in the movie. I always liked the times on “Two and a Half Men” when they’d make some reference to it, like the time Jon Cryer was trying to buy some new clothes and he came out of a dressing room wearing the suit Duckie wore to the prom. It blows my mind that Molly Ringwald is now playing the parts of mothers…

    • oh i totally agree. duckie was my favorite part of pretty in pink. i guess for my blog i am just touching on how the movies or tv shows or songs affected my life and how i felt about them. i didn’t really do an overview of what i thought were obvious movies that everyone has seen. so it’s more personal than informative. i love jon cryer though, read his memoir.

  9. I love Genesis and Phil Collins. Though I never saw the film Pretty In Pink, I loved the Soundtrack. One of the many soundtracks I own to this day.
