Countdown to MEMPHIS – 6 days!

COUNTDOWN TO MEMPHIS – 6 days!

I missed my annual pilgrimage to Memphis last year because I was on the U2 tour, so I am doubly excited for this year’s visit! Every year I go to my beloved Memphis for the Beale Street Music Festival the first weekend in May to celebrate Memphis in May. This year MusicFest is April 29, April 30 and May 1, but I am going to Memphis for five whole glorious days from Thursday April 28 through Monday May 2. And this year I get to play tour guide in my most favorite city because my friend Allyssa, who has never been to Memphis, has decided to join me.

We are staying at the lovely Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, Mississippi just 30 minutes from Memphis. I stay there because I get three of the four nights comped plus I love to play the slots so it’s well worth the drive. Besides going to the Beale Street Music Festival, we will of course be visiting the great Memphis museums including Graceland, Sun Studio, Memphis Music Hall of Fame (which is new and I’ve never been to), National Civil Rights Museum (haven’t been to since I worked there and the remodel), Blues Hall of Fame (which is also new and I’ve never been to); and eating at my favorite Memphis restaurants including The Cupboard, Blue Plate Cafe, Alfred’s, Rum Boogie Cafe, Central BBQ, The Arcade Restaurant and Marlowe’s. In between all of that we will spend time hanging out on Beale Street and driving around Midtown, Cooper Young and Crosstown – and of course I have to visit my old house.
