Urban Cowboy and U2 – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

Like, OH MY GOD! It’s totally awesome you came back to find out what my favorite U’s are from the 1980s. Like the most rad tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Sorry, but I could not remember any television shows I watched in the 1980s beginning with U (nor could I find any) , so no tv on this post.

Urban Cowboy
Not as good as Saturday Night Fever or Grease, but Urban Cowboy is a very entertaining John Travolta vehicle that he also danced in and was the only one of his three movie deal with Paramount released in the 1980s, released in 1980 actually.

U2
1first-u2-poster2What can I say about U2? If you know me, you are already familiar with my passion/obsession with the four lads from Ireland. My other blog is about U2, called On the Road with U2, and I wrote a book, also called On the Road with U2, about all my travels the past 25 years going to U2 shows and the people I’ve met and the places I’ve seen. I’ve loved U2 since the release of The Joshua Tree, still my favorite album today, in 1987 when I was a freshman in high school. I had a U2 poster hanging on the wall in my bedroom labeled with everyone’s names so I wouldn’t get Edge and Adam confused – that poster (with the labels still on it) still hangs on my wall today. I had photos of the drummer Larry Mullen ripped out of teen magazines hanging in my locker. I still love Larry today 1ab me and bono 1992and was lucky enough to meet him in 2001 and finally get my picture with him last year. (I met and got my picture with Bono in 1992) My favorite song in high school, and still today, was/is “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” I remember carrying my big boombox walking along the beach in Ocean City, Maryland the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of high school blaring “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Unfortunately, I did not see U2 in concert on The Joshua Tree tour in 1987 because my mom thought at 14 I was too young to go to a concert. So when the concert movie Rattle and Hum came out the following year, I went with a bunch of friends and it was almost like being at a 012abU2 concert – not that I would know then. Also, my worlds collided when U2 visited Graceland and my Larry talked so passionately about my Elvis. By then, I had all of U2’s albums and listened to nothing but and watched all the U2 specials on MTV. I’m still upset about not being allowed to see The Joshua Tree tour, but I have more than made up for it seeing 90 U2 concerts since the ZooTv tour in 1992. 1. The 80s was my theme last year (SO much fun!) and Urban Cowboy was my U, too! I watched that movie over and over on cable…it had a lot of adult content, so I’m not sure I should have been watching it at that age, but I loved Grease, so anything John Travolta had my attention.

  2. That’s a lot of love for U2! They’ve always been a band I’ve liked but not loved, but I have a lot of respect for what they’ve done musically and socially.

  3. I didn’t listen to U2 in the 80’s, but I grew into their sound later.

A TV show I used to watch in the 80’s that doesn’t quite begin with ‘U’ but almost was Tales of the Unexpected – they were based on Roald Dahl short stories and they weren’t the kiddy-friendly variety ones – they were really creepy 🙂

  4. Like Omigawd!… Just dropped in from A-Z and bummed I missed this. Will have to go back and catch up. This was way cool. Loved Urban Cowboy (John Travolta is still awesome!) U2 Trip Through Your Wires. Let’s see favorite 80’s beginning with A: television ABC After School Special, who didn’t watch that? After General Hospital of course. For bands, A-HA ~ Take on Me… still love that song. Movie would be Any Which Way You Can or Aliens! Thanks for giving me the opportunity to reminisce!

  5. The 80s is a great theme. I loved the 80’s. Still love all the music. With AtoZ drawing to a close this weekend, it’s almost time for me to start thinking what my theme will be next year. 80s might be fun to do.

I love U2. I have the Rattle and Hum DVD. That was a great concert. I love Bono and I’m so enamored with his philanthropic spirit. He’s such a giving man. I’m looking forward to reading all about your concert tours!

I hardly remember Urban Cowboy. i know I saw it but can’t really remember it. I do remember the scene with JT riding the mechanical bull…

Now I’m going to go listen to some U2… 🙂

  7. I hate to admit it, I was not a U2 fan in the 80s – I only began to appreciate them later. Such amazing musicians.

  9. Once again Deena, you’ve done an amazing job with the U category. I’ve watched Urban Cowboy a couple of times and I have to admit it was a great movie. I don’t have any favorite movies or tv shows from the 80’s beginning with U but I do share the love that you have for U2!! Omg. I can’t express how much I enjoyed their music then and especially now. You know this by my reaction to FINALLY seeing them for the first time and meeting 3 out of 4 of them last year!! I’m still thanking you for all of your help in that. But once again great blog and thanks for sharing once again your love for the biggest and greatest band out there and much success with your journey. Blessings.
