Valerie, Valley Girl, Violent Femmes – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

It’s, like, totally bitchin’ you came back to find out what my favorite V’s are from the 1980s. Like the most righteous tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Valerie
You might better remember this television show as The Hogan Family. After Valerie Harper left the show in season four, Sandy Duncan replaced her and they renamed Valerie as The Hogan Family. This is where I first saw the adorable Jason Bateman. It also starred Danny Ponce (who was Jason Avery on Knots Landing) and Josh Taylor (who was Chris Kositchek then Roman Brady on Days of our Lives and and later Dylan’s dad on Beverly Hills 90210).

Valley Girl
A quintessential 1980s movie with the quintessential 1980s soundtrack, including “I Melt With You,” Valley Girl was Nicolas Cage’s first starring role, and I love Nic Cage! It is a romantic comedy or dramedy, I’m not sure which, about a boy from the wrong side of town falling for a girl out of his league. It is sort of like an edgier, reverse Pretty in Pink or Some Kind of Wonderful. The movie is aptly named though because Valley Girl is ALL Val talk. Anyone who is a fan of the 1980s will surely love this movie because you don’t get more 80s than Valley Girl.

Violent Femmes
Even though their self titled album Violent Femmes was released in 1983, I remember my friends and I playing it on the back of the bus going to away softball games in 1987 and 1988. Their debut album included such great songs such as “Gone Daddy Gone,” “Please Do Not Go,” the most popular “Blister in the Sun,” and my favorites “Kiss Off” and “Add it Up.”

Thank you for joining me on my trip back to the totally tubular 1980s as I complete my Blogging from A to Z Challenge. What was your favorite tv show, movie and band or song from the 80s starting with the letter V? Please come back tomorrow to read about my faves from the 80s that start with the letter W. And be sure to check out the 1970s from A to Z here.

  1. You definitely don’t get more 1980s than Valley Girl. I never hear of violent femmes. Great post.

  2. Like oh my god, it’s so radical to find another 80’s lover like myself. 80’s soundtracks were just bitchin’ weren’t they? And valley girls? For sure! Anything outside of the 80s is like grody to the max.

  3. I wrote an article about Deborah Foreman once and she sent me a nice thank-you note. I still have the email. One of my few brushes with fame in life! I still follow her on Instagram. She sells jewelry now.

  7. This was a hard one Deena! I didn’t have any favorites with the letter V. Kind of disappointing because it’s the first letter of my name. 😜 LOL. But I definitely enjoyed your blog as always!! Keep up the good work and blessings.
