Empty Nest, Eddie and the Cruisers, Eurythmics – the 1980s from A to Z

Blogging from A to Z April Challenge

Like, OH MY GOD! It’s totally awesome you came back to find out what my favorite E’s are from the 1980s. Like the most rad tv show, movie and music from the 80s.

Empty Nest
I would not consider Empty Nest one of my favorite television shows, but I did watch it and enjoyed it – and I didn’t have a favorite show from the 1980s that began with the letter E. Empty Nest was a spinoff of the Golden Girls and starred Dinah Manoff (Marty from my favorite movie Grease) and Kristy McNichol – and an adorable dog named Dreyfus.

Eddie and the Cruisers
It’s called a cult film because Eddie and the Cruisers bombed at the box office upon its release in 1983, but took off the following summer when it aired on HBO and sparked the soudtrack to become a hit. I, for one, became completely obsessed with this movie and its soundtrack in middle school. I still love it today, both the movie and its music. It is about a 1950s band, well technically they were in 1963, but everyone knows the 50s era was from 1945 when WWII ended until JFK was assassinated in November 1963 and the Beatles came to America in 1964. The gorgeous Michael Pare who played Eddie Wilson was not singing unfortunately. The music was by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band, but I still see Michael Pare in my head when I listen to it.

Eurythmics
I almost put Eddie and the Cruisers soundtrack as my favorite because I love it THAT much, but I thought for variety sake I’d choose the Eurythmics and they were REALLY good and Annie Lennox is just so cool. The Eurythmics had a lot of great songs in the 80s including “Who’s That Girl” and “Here Comes the Rain Again,” but “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” is my favorite.

Thank you for joining me on my trip back to the totally tubular 1980s as I complete my Blogging from A to Z Challenge. What was your favorite tv show, movie and band or song from the 80s starting with the letter E? Please come back tomorrow to read about my faves from the 80s that start with the letter F. And be sure to check out the 1970s from A to Z here.

  1. The Eurythmics are brilliant. My husband and I saw them in concert a few years back – I say a few it was probably between 10 and 15 :). Our friends had tickets, but couldn’t go because of illness, so they gave them to us – it was awesome. I don’t think I know Eddie and the Cruisers, but I did have a thing for Michael Pare, especially in The Philadelphia Experiment.

  2. Loved Eddie & the Cruisers! My sister had the soundtrack on tape and I used to borrow it from her all the time just so I could listen to “Season in Hell’. Loved the psychedelia of that song. 🙂

  3. Great choices for E. I used to watch Empty Nest for Kristy McNichol. It’s sad that she had to leave the show to deal with her bipolar issues. I loved Eddie & The Cruisers for the music. and of course, I love love love Annie Lennox and David A Stewart!

  4. I love this idea for a theme, even though I am too young to remember much before 1988. And I love discovering the blogs of fellow Marylanders (I’m in Rockville.)

  5. I love the Eurythmics. Sweet Dreams was the first time I ever heard them and I couldn’t really get my young head around it, except I decided I liked it 🙂

Oh wow, I love Eddie and the Cruisers! What a great soundtrack. I cranked up Darkside just now! Wow, I need to watch that movie again.
    Great song by the Eurythmics!
I don’t recognize Empty Nest at all so I must not have ever watched it.
    Great post!

  8. I’ll admit, I was not a big Eurythmics fan initially. It wasn’t until much later I learned to appreciate them. Like most of the bands you have covered thus far, I own at least one CD from Eurythmics. With over 500 CD’s in my library, the majority are from the 80’s.
I do remember watching Empty Nest. I had forgotten about this one. I liked Richard Mulligan especially. Of course I was familiar with him already because he was on the spoof, Soap.
