Broncos #1 in AFC after defeating Chiefs 35-28
It has been said whoever won today’s AFC West match up between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs would win the AFC and go on to the Super Bowl. I am excited and relieved that my Broncos are that team – defeating the Chiefs 35-28. The stars of this game were Eric Decker and Peyton Manning.
Eric Decker had his best game of the season, if not his career. Decker had four of the Broncos’ five touchdowns, breaking a team record for most touchdown receptions in a game. For the first 11 games this season, Decker had a total of three touchdowns. Up until six minutes left in the fourth quarter, Decker outscored the Chiefs by himself (4 TDs = 28 pts vs KC 21 pts). Eric Decker finished the game with 174 yards for eight receptions and four touchdowns.
Peyton Manning’s five touchdown passes against the Chiefs today gives him 41 touchdown passes this season, which ties him for eighth most in a season in NFL history (and there are four more games remaining). This extends Manning’s NFL record to 81 games in his career with three or more touchdown passes. It is the eighth game this year, which is the best in the NFL. Peyton Manning finished the game 22 – 35 for 403 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions.
With this season sweep of the Chiefs, the Broncos are now 10-2 and lead the AFC by two games. Coach John Fox returns to Denver for the last four games. The Broncos remaining schedule is fairly easy: Titans, Chargers, Texans and Raiders. The Broncos should stroll into the playoffs and then to the Super Bowl. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, not just yet.
