Will the Grizzlies Make the Playoffs?

With just seven games left, will the Memphis Grizzlies make it back to the playoffs? Winning just two games of their five-game road trip, the Grizzlies are back in the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.

There are three teams vying for two playoff spots in the West: The Dallas Mavericks, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Phoenix Suns. One of these teams could make NBA history by being the first team to miss the playoffs with 50 wins. If they were in the Eastern Conference, they would be in third place. Currently, these three teams have identical records at 44-31. If they remained tied, the Grizzlies have the advantage over the Suns winning the season series 3-0 but fall to the Mavs losing the season series 0-3.

Western Conference Standings
Team Win-Loss Winning Percentage Games Back Conference Record
7 Dallas 44-31 .587 15 24-21
8 Memphis 44-31 .587 15 25-22
9 Phoenix 44-31 .587 15 24-21

The reigning Western Conference finalist Memphis Grizzlies have overcome a coaching change, a slow start and major injuries to have one of the best records in the NBA since January. In their remaining seven games, the Grizzlies will play four playoff-caliber teams, including the Mavs at home and the Suns in Phoenix. Since the Spurs and Heat have clinched their playoff spots, maybe their key players will rest and give the Grizzlies a break.
