Injuries and Turnovers plague Grizzlies in their 84-99 Loss to Pelicans

Grizzlies power forward Zach Randolph left last night’s game after only eight minutes to rush to the hospital for the birth of his third child. He made it just in time to welcome his baby boy. That was the good news. In fact, it was pretty much the only good news in last night’s 84-99 loss to the Pelicans.

The Pelicans, really? Who loses to the Pelicans? Certainly not a team who was in the Western Conference Finals last season and named Best Franchise in Sports this season. But alas it happened, and it wasn’t even close. Memphis continues to be plagued by turnovers. In the first quarter the Grizzlies’ eight turnovers turned into 14 Pelicans’ points. That was a deficit they couldn’t climb out of. At the end of the third quarter, Memphis had 14 turnovers and were down 57-79.

Along with turnovers, the Grizzlies were plagued with injuries last night. After only 14 minutes, Jerryd Bayless left the game with a right knee sprain. In the fourth quarter, Mike Conley left the game to get stitches in his cheek after being jabbed in the face with an elbow. Conley was the game’s high scorer with 26 points. With three of their strongest players out, the Grizzlies bench went on a run pulling within nine points of the Pelicans with just two minutes left in the game. Mike Miller made three three-pointers and rookie Jamaal Franklin made his NBA debut scoring four points.  But unfortunately the Grizzlies could not pull ahead. Memphis lost to New Orleans 84-99.

The Memphis Grizzlies continue their home stand Saturday night hosting the Golden State Warriors. While Randolph and Conley are expected to play, it is unsure whether Bayless will make it onto the court.
